Actress
Susannah York has died, aged 72.
York
first rose to prominence in 1963, appearing in Tom
Jones, and would go on to appear in several
cult classics. In 1968 she co-starred in the groundbreaking
The Killing of Sister George - a
censorship cause celebré at the time - and
followed this with Oh What a Lovely War,
They Shoot Horses Don't They? and
The Battle of Britain at the end
of the decade.
In
the 1970's, her films included Zee and Co.,
Robert Altman's Images, Gold,
The Shout (pictured) and
The Silent Partner. In 1978 she played Superman's
mother in Superman - The Movie and
reprised the role in the sequel, replacing Marlon
Brando.
She
also appeared in The Awakening and
Yellowbeard, as well as numerous
TV productions.
