The ShoutActress Susannah York has died, aged 72.

York first rose to prominence in 1963, appearing in Tom Jones, and would go on to appear in several cult classics. In 1968 she co-starred in the groundbreaking The Killing of Sister George - a censorship cause celebré at the time - and followed this with Oh What a Lovely War, They Shoot Horses Don't They? and The Battle of Britain at the end of the decade.

In the 1970's, her films included Zee and Co., Robert Altman's Images, Gold, The Shout (pictured) and The Silent Partner. In 1978 she played Superman's mother in Superman - The Movie and reprised the role in the sequel, replacing Marlon Brando.

She also appeared in The Awakening and Yellowbeard, as well as numerous TV productions.
