It's
been confirmed that Maniac, the rather
excellent and intense re-imagining of the trashy 1980
splatter movie by William Lustig, has been passed
uncut by the British censors. The BBFC's recent
announcement of a tightening of the restrictions of
sexual violence suggested that the film could
be an early victim of this new policy, even though
there is no actual sexual violence in the film - just
the very strong threat of it.
The
film gets a UK cinema release on March 15th, and this
snazzy new poster has just been released to promote
it.
Meanwhile,
in a move that further suggests that the new BBFC
policy is either a load of hot air or is going to
be as subjectively imposed as ever, French porno-exploitation
shocker Baise Moi has been passed
uncut. A decade ago, the film had its hardcore rape
scene, alongside a shot of a gun being fired into
a man's anus, cut to protect the public. Apparently,
we no longer need that protection. No doubt the censors
will blow up a lot of smoke about context, but as
anyone who has seen Baise Moi can
tell you, that's basically bullshit... the film has
no other purpose beyond sex, violence and sensationalism,
and for it to be passed uncut while milder 'sex works'
are chopped or restricted is laughable.
