While
we at Strange Things don't generally
share the distaste automatically shown by many
fans and critics for remakes, revamps and reboots,
sometimes we do find ourselves shaking our heads
and asking 'why?'. The new version of
Fright Night is a case in point:
not because the original was a classic movie,
but more because it wasn't. A major studio,
bland mid-Eighties effort, Fright Night
was inoffensive, but no classic (unless you're
the sort of person who believes 'classic' means
'any film I saw while I was growing up').
It
is, however, perfect for the post-Twilight
audience who are looking for unchallenging thrills,
and so a remake does make sense, I guess. And
given that the first film was no great shakes,
we shouldn't be too upset that this remake looks
like a fat-free, low sugar horror story with a
couple of name actors (Colin Farrell, David Tennant);
a facsimile of the original film with a One
Tree Hill makeover. In 3D. E4 viewers
are probably wetting themselves with excitement.
But
don't take our cynical, world-weary word for it
- check out the trailer, and - if you really want
to - battle through crowds of teenage girls in
order to see it at FrightFest
a whole week before it opens .
