JENNY GILLESPIE - BELITA
Narooma

Jenny Gillespie - BelitaThere are records that inspire you, records that make you jump up and down, records that tears your heart out… and of course, records that nauseate you. And then, there are those special records that feel so intimate, so pure and so astonishingly gorgeous that you feel as if you have the artist sat in the room with you, opening their heart and giving you a private insight into something you have no right in seeing.

That’s very much the case with this breathtakingly lovely five track EP from Jenny Gillespie, who blends quiet, dreamy acoustic folk ballads with a quiet pop sensibility. From opener Creature of Our Make on, this is a flawless collection of intimate, haunting and gorgeous songs that are so stripped down and chilled out that they almost become ambient. Gillespie’s near-whispered vocals (backed by Sam Amidon) float over a deceptively complex yet entirely accessible folk rock backing that takes in hints of prog and moments of unsettling eeriness to create a remarkably warm, deeply personal sounding record.

This is magnificent stuff – defying easy categorisation, playing with genres without being smug about it, and creating music that is crushingly beautiful, Jenny Gillespie has come up with a bit of a masterpiece here.
